Bento packs all of those elements to capture the essence of washoku in one small box. In recent years Bento, Japan’s most creative boxed lunch, has caught the attention of many worldwide.
In addition to being economical and a great tool to help encourage healthy eating habits, Bento are also fun and pleasing to the eye. Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in bento as a new ‘food genre’ to express one’s creativity, called “Kyara-Ben (Character Bento).”
This Japanese style of boxed lunch is typically a well-balanced meal with rice, fish or meat, and vegetables. Now it is your turn to create your own bento!
First, submit pictures of your own creation(s). Five finalists will be chosen for the best of five different criteria: Most Traditional; Most Healthy; Most Creative; Most Delicious; and Most Comical.
Submissions must contain
1) a photo of the bento lunch box,
2) a photo of the contestant with the bento,
and 3) a list of ingredients.

A final battle of the best local* entries will take place in Houston, at HEB at Bunker Hill & I-10 (9710 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77055) on Saturday, February 1st, 2014; 3 PM.
