Third Annual Houston Bento Contest: Call for Entries

The Consulate-General of Japan in Houston presents the Third Annual Bento Contest in cooperation with the Japan-America Society of Houston.

Japanese food culture is revered for more than just sushi alone. In December 2013, The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (or UNESCO) has announced that “traditional Japanese cuisine, or washoku” was added to their Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The washoku mindset is one of respect for sustainability and locally produced ingredients.

Bento packs all of those elements to capture the essence of washoku in one small box. In recent years Bento, Japan’s most creative boxed lunch, has caught the attention of many worldwide.

In addition to being economical and a great tool to help encourage healthy eating habits, Bento are also fun and pleasing to the eye. Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in bento as a new ‘food genre’ to express one’s creativity, called “Kyara-Ben (Character Bento).”

This Japanese style of boxed lunch is typically a well-balanced meal with rice, fish or meat, and vegetables. Now it is your turn to create your own bento!

First, submit pictures of your own creation(s). Five finalists will be chosen for the best of five different criteria: Most Traditional; Most Healthy; Most Creative; Most Delicious; and Most Comical.

Submissions must contain

1) a photo of the bento lunch box,

2) a photo of the contestant with the bento,

and 3) a list of ingredients.

Submissions must be sent to info@ho.mofa.go.jp.
